THE RELEVANCE OF EXPLANATORY DICTIONARIES IN LEARNING FOREIGN LANGUAGES

Abstract

This article analyzes the linguodidactic significance of explanatory dictionaries in the process of learning foreign languages, in particular, English. It is highlighted that explanatory dictionaries allow the learner to understand the lexical meaning of new words, their polysemy, synonymous and antonymic relationships, grammatical features, pronunciation, stylistic coloring, and cases of use in speech. The article argues that the effective use of explanatory dictionaries helps to deeply master not only lexical, but also semantic, grammatical, pragmatic and cultural aspects of learning a foreign language.
